Private Label Water: How It Works (Design to Delivery)

Last Updated: March 18, 2026

What Is Private Label Water?

Private label water is bottled water produced by a bottling company and sold under your brand name. The bottler handles everything: water sourcing, purification, bottle filling, custom label printing, application, and shipping. You receive a finished, sealed product that looks like your brand made it. Your customers see your logo. The bottler stays invisible.

Key facts: Private label water starts at $0.26/bottle. Minimum orders start at 24 cases (~576 bottles). The entire process from design to delivery takes 3-4 weeks for a first order. No bottling equipment, water source, or FDA certification required on your end.

How Private Label Water Works: 5 Steps

Step 1: Design Your Label

You create the label that will go on your bottles. You have two options:

  • Self-service: Use CustomWater.com’s free online label designer. Upload your logo, pick your colors, add text, and preview the bottle in minutes. No graphic design skills needed.
  • Assisted design: Send your logo and brand guidelines to the supplier. They create the label and send you a proof for approval. MyLabelWater.com offers this as a free service.

The label prints in full CMYK color on waterproof polymer material. It wraps around the bottle and is applied by machine for a clean, professional finish.

“First-time buyers overthink the label. Your logo, your brand colors, and maybe a tagline. That is all you need. The simpler the design, the better it looks on a small bottle.” — David Phelps, Operations at MyLabelWater.com

Step 2: Choose Your Bottle

Select the bottle type and size that fits your use case:

Bottle Size Price From Best For
Plastic (PET) 8 oz $0.22 Trade shows, welcome bags, waiting rooms
Plastic (PET) 12 oz $0.24 Offices, small events
Plastic (PET) 16.9 oz $0.26 Standard — events, hotels, restaurants, retail
Aluminum 16 oz $0.40 Premium events, eco-branding, executive settings
Glass Various $0.80+ Luxury hotels, fine dining (Eldorado Springs only)

Step 3: Place Your Order

Minimum orders start at 24 cases (~576 bottles of 16.9oz). For most business uses, 50-100 cases is the sweet spot — you get volume pricing without needing warehouse space.

You will receive a digital proof showing your label on the bottle. Review it carefully: check logo placement, colors, text accuracy, and spelling. Once you approve the proof, production begins.

Step 4: Production

The bottling facility fills your bottles with purified water, prints your labels, applies them by machine, seals the bottles with tamper-evident caps, and packages them in cases. The entire production process happens in FDA and SQF certified facilities.

First orders take 3-4 weeks from proof approval to delivery. This includes label plate creation, production scheduling, filling, labeling, quality checks, and shipping.

“We run production across 10 facilities. Your order gets assigned to the plant closest to your delivery address. That cuts shipping time and freight cost.” — Danielle, CEO of CustomWater.com

Step 5: Delivery and Reorders

Water arrives on pallets, shrink-wrapped by the case. Most suppliers ship via freight carrier for large orders or UPS/FedEx for smaller quantities.

Reorders are faster because your label is already on file. CustomWater.com ships reorders in 7-10 business days. You call, click, or email — no redesign, no new proof, no waiting.

What Does It Cost?

What Certifications Does the Supplier Need?

FDA certification is required. All bottled water sold in the United States must be produced in FDA-certified facilities. The FDA regulates bottled water as a food product under 21 CFR Part 165.

SQF certification (Safe Quality Food) is a third-party food safety certification that goes beyond FDA minimums. It demonstrates that the facility follows rigorous quality control processes. CustomWater.com and MyLabelWater.com hold both FDA and SQF certifications.

State bottling licenses are required in most states for commercial water bottling operations.

You do not need any certifications yourself. The bottling company holds all required certifications. You are purchasing a finished product, not operating a bottling facility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own water source for private label water?

No. The bottling company sources the water. You are buying a finished product with your label on it. You do not need a water source, bottling equipment, or any certifications.

How long does the entire process take?

First order: 3-4 weeks from label design to delivery. Reorders: 7-10 business days (CustomWater.com). The longest part of the first order is label design and proof approval — once you approve, production moves quickly.

Can I sell private label water in retail stores?

Yes. Many retailers, convenience stores, and specialty shops sell private label water. The bottles are produced in FDA-certified facilities and meet all retail requirements. You would need to handle distribution and retail relationships yourself.

What is the difference between private label water and custom bottled water?

They are the same product. “Private label water,” “custom bottled water,” “custom labeled water,” and “branded bottled water” all refer to filled, sealed water bottles with your custom label. Different terms, same thing.

Can I change my label design later?

Yes. You can update your label design at any time. Most suppliers do not charge for design changes. Your new label will be used on the next order.
